Overcoming the Fear of Getting Started…
When beginning anything new such as an activity, friendship or even a career, it is completely normal for one to feel apprehensive. However, for some, it can be more serious than that. Some people suffer from Neophobia.
What is Neophobia?
Neophobia is the fear of new things and often hinders a person from stepping outside of their comfort zone. Some say the fear of new and unfamiliar things could be related to the fear of success and failure. This conclusion can be drawn as the event of success or failure requires you to take a chance on something that is uncertain. That very uncertainty is what unsettles a neophobe as they lack control of the situation.
Plenty of people are victims of favoring instant gratification over long-term gratification. This is why many give up on new hobbies or ventures, soon after they have only begun, as they get frustrated with their inability to automatically excel at it. The fear of starting something new is very common but does not have to deter you from actually doing so.
Getting over your fears
Osho Rajneesh once said, “Life begins where fear ends.” This quote is highly accurate and potentially life-changing as it puts into perspective how restricted we are by fear itself. We may refuse to branch out and explore different cultures, delicacies or world views which then ultimately limit us from living life to the fullest.
Getting over any fear requires something as simple as trying to confront it. As daunting as it may seem fear itself is built within your mind, therefore, you have the power to overcome it by dealing with it.
Most people have dreams of being their own boss but only a small percentage of people actually succeed in doing so. If you had a brilliant business idea but were too afraid to execute the plan, due to a lack of knowledge on how to go about it, you wouldn’t be the first and most certainly won’t be the last.
However, you need to remind yourself that if you really want to be the boss one day you need to make sacrifices along with tough decisions such as overcoming your fears, no matter how much they frighten you. This includes the fear of starting something new despite you having very little control over how things may turn out.
Trying out new things.
Deborah Moggach once said, “The only real failure is the failure to try, and the measure of success is how we cope with disappointment.” If you want to learn a new language, move to a different city or become an entrepreneur just go for it! After trying you’ll know if it was truly meant for you or not and that beats pondering on the “what if’s” for the rest of your life.
